The global economy isn’t working for everyone. It’s driving inequality, environmental damage, and concentrating wealth in the hands of a few.
Amazon – the world’s largest online retailer – sits at the centre of these concerns.
Despite enormous global profits, Amazon continues to face serious questions over the amount of tax it pays, poor employment practices, and its impact on local businesses and the environment.
Tax can be a tool for paying for the services we need to flourish as a society and to tackle inequality. But Amazon doesn’t pay its taxes fairly or transparently. Amazon’s tax avoidance is estimated to cost the UK hundreds of millions (at least) every year.
That’s why the JustMoney Movement is launching Challenge Amazon – Break the Habit, Fix the Rules.

Reduce reliance on Amazon where possible and choose ethical, local, and sustainable alternatives.
Fix the Rules
Push for fairer global tax rules, including reform through the UN Tax Convention.
A collective Christian response
Millions of Christians and an estimated 40,000 churches across the UK have real economic influence through how we spend our money. We can choose to do so in ways that show our love of neighbours, near and far, and our care for creation.

Why now?
- 14 million people, including 4 million children live in relative poverty in the UK
- The climate crisis is worsening and urgently needs finance to address it
- 700 million people globally survive on less than $2.15 a day
- Wealth and power are increasingly concentrated in global corporations
- How we spend our money matters. Our choices shape the world we live in.

How can I break the habit?
As Christians, we are called to seek right relationships with our neighbours and the earth. Instead of shopping with Amazon, we can make more ethical choices:
- Look for accredited marks and schemes that tell you more about the ethics of a product or company. For example, The Fairtrade Mark, Organic certification, Real Living Wage Employer or Fair Tax Mark
- Choose to support businesses that have a positive impact, like social enterprises, B Corps and co-operatives. Support local businesses that serve your community.
- Instead of shopping new, do you ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’? What about ‘rethink’ (do I need it?), ‘rehome’ (what will I do with things I no longer need?) or ‘repair’ (through one of the growing network of repair cafes).
