During this summer of heatwaves, many of us are longing for rain. The 15th July is St Swithin’s Day. According to legend, if it rains on this day then it will rain for 40 days – and if it stays fine, it will be dry for 40 days.
Even in these times of increased extreme weather, driven by a changing climate, the meteorological evidence doesn’t back up this myth! But 40 is a significant number for Christians for lots of reasons – it’s the timespan of the flood in Genesis, the Israelites wandering in the desert, and Jesus’ period in the wilderness before he began his ministry.
We’re starting a new appeal this St Swithin’s Day and asking for a deluge of support over the next 40 days.
A bit different – we’re not just asking for donations.
You’re probably aware that many charities are struggling at the moment. JustMoney Movement is no exception. The funding to keep producing our resources, training, campaign actions and events, is ever-more fragile. Funders are shrinking and changing priorities and many donations are down.
I know we ask you to dig deep in your support for us periodically, and times are difficult for many, but this time we are asking something a little different.
Can you think creatively about how you might help us? Are you connected to any trusts or foundations that make grants? Do you know any philanthropists? Could you talk to your workplace or church about supporting us?
Can you help us get 40 offers of support, ideas or connections over the next 40 days?
We are thankful for this brilliant movement of thousands of individuals and hundreds of churches across the country, who share our vision of an economy that works for people and planet. We’re asking this movement to draw on our collective resources so that the work towards that vision can continue.

My first grandchild was born and died on St Swithin’s day 16 years ago,
I remember him each year.
I have been looking for a charity to support in his memory.
So far the ones I have seen are not suitable for me.
