Our keynote speaker Dr Gideon Bakare explored the theme of economic deprivation, mental health and possible solutions in the Black community.
Dr Bakare is a pastor, teacher, church leader, Bible scholar, evangelist, missionary, professional counsellor, author and prayer warrior, who has served in pastoral ministry for over 30 years both in Nigeria and the UK. He is currently the senior pastor of Evangelical Global Outreach Church London and a lecturer at St Joseph Christian College. Dr Bakare completed his PhD from the Department of Theology and Religion, University of Birmingham. His research interests include biblical wisdom, hermeneutics, leadership and pastoral ministry. He leads a private counselling practice and is a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy.
George Amadi, JustMoney’s Movement Builder with Black majority churches, said: “The Black majority churches and community have been engaged of recent in discussions around economic deprivation and how to help the next generation overcome the problem. Statistics show that 25% of people in Black households experience persistent low income after housing costs. This is alarming and clearly shows a growing challenge that needs to be addressed. Dr Bakare gave a clear and concise road map dealing with the root causes and possible solutions. In the webinar we also heard about JustMoney Movement’s work on campaigning for a Fair Banking Act. Access to banking services is a problem for many communities, but some sections of society face financial exclusion more systematically than others. Research has found that people from minority ethnic groups experience discrimination when accessing financial services in the UK. We heard about what actions individuals and churches can take to advocate for justice in the financial system.
