Rosie Venner (Money Makes Change programme manager) introduces an updated resource that compares 5 ethical bank accounts for churches.

More and more churches are looking for an ethical option for everyday banking. Many of the big High Street banks are heavily invested in fossil fuels, nuclear weapons and the arms trade. If you want to know that the money in your bank account is being put to good use, not fuelling climate change and conflict, or investing in harmful industries, what options are out there?

Thankfully there are a growing number of banks that have transparent ethical polices and think carefully about who they lend to and where they invest. There are banks that shape a fairer society by paying their taxes and treating their employees well.

What a difference it would make if every church in the UK thought carefully about their choice of bank, to ensure the money that they steward is used for the common good!

Our analysis of charity current accounts

We’ve updated one of our most popular Money Makes Change resources – an analysis of 5 of the more ethical current account options for churches. As well as looking at ethical issues, we compare the 5 charity current accounts on features like fees, branch access, cards and internet banking.

  • Download the resource  and share it today with your church leader, treasurer or finance group.

We’d love to hear from you if you use this resource! Let us know by emailing info@eccr.org.uk or tagging us on social media.

Engaging with your bank

If you are switching to a more ethical bank, do take the time to tell your current provider why you are leaving. It’s important that they hear your concerns. You’ll be joining a movement of organisations and individuals ‘voting’ with their finances for a fairer, more sustainable world.
